Itinerary

Day 1 Arrival, Freetown
Upon arrival at Lungi International Airport (FNA), you will be warmly welcomed by local representatives. From the airport, begin a scenic boat journey along the river to Freetown, the vibrant capital. The crossing offers stunning views of the coast and a first glimpse of this fascinating country. The rest of the day is free to settle in and start exploring West Africa’s capital at your own pace. Meals: Dinner (breakfast and lunch not included)
Day 2 Bunce Island and Tasso Island
Today you will explore a significant chapter of Sierra Leone’s history with a visit to Bunce Island. Founded around 1670, this fortified outpost served as a major hub in the transatlantic slave trade. For over a century, tens of thousands of Africans were held here under harsh conditions before being transported to North America and the Caribbean. Walk among the ruins of the castle, where remnants of slave quarters, dungeons, and commercial buildings tell the island’s dramatic story. Afterwards, visit Tasso Island, an idyllic island famous for its pristine beaches, lush vegetation, and relaxed atmosphere. Enjoy the white sand, turquoise waters, and peaceful surroundings, reflecting on the day’s experiences and the beauty of nature. Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner
Day 3 Sugar Loaf Mountain and Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary
Overlooking Freetown, Sugar Loaf Mountain offers a spectacular backdrop to the city. Part of the Western Area Forest Reserve, it is home to diverse flora and fauna. In the morning, hike to the summit. In the afternoon, visit the Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary, located in the rainforest just 40 minutes from Freetown. Founded in 1995, the sanctuary rescues and rehabilitates orphaned or abandoned chimpanzees. Spend the night in one of Tacugama’s eco-lodges, simple chalets nestled among the trees, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the rainforest and fall asleep to the sounds of nature, waking to the calls of the chimpanzees. Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner
Day 4 Makeni and Rogbonko
After breakfast overlooking the lush rainforest, travel to Makeni, a lively town in the heart of Sierra Leone. Along the way, enjoy changing landscapes of rolling hills, green fields, and vibrant villages with local markets. In Makeni, a city tour will reveal its unique character: colorful markets, aromatic spices, traditional jewelry and fabrics, alongside historical monuments. Continue to Rogbonko, a hidden village in the peaceful countryside. Here you will experience authentic rural life, participating in traditional ceremonies, learning local cooking, and discovering basket-weaving, while interacting with residents and gaining insight into their culture. Return to Makeni at sunset for the overnight stay. Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner
Day 5 Kabala
After breakfast, head toward Kabala, a city nestled in the stunning Wara Wara Mountains. Towering rock formations shaped over centuries dominate the landscape, while hidden waterfalls and lush valleys host traditional villages. Explore the surroundings on foot, breathe in the fresh mountain air, and enjoy breathtaking views. In the afternoon, discover Kabala’s cultural heritage with a visit to a cotton weaver: watch the transformation of raw materials into colorful fabrics and, if desired, try your hand at the loom. The day concludes with dinner at the hotel and a folk dance and cultural performance, celebrating Sierra Leone’s spirit through drumming and colorful costumes. Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner
Day 6 Heritage Trail and Boma
Travel to Kabala, where the mighty Sewa River meets the Waanje to form the Kittam, flowing into the Atlantic. From here, embark on the Heritage Trail, a journey into Sierra Leone’s cultural heart, reaching the village of Boma along the Moa River near Nainiati (Sand Island). Boma is notable for being led by a woman; legend has it the village would prosper only under female leadership. Observe daily life, traditional dances, and rituals. Admire the Cotton Tree of Boma, the last of its kind in the area, symbolizing the village’s harmonious relationship with nature. Spend the night camping on the village outskirts, fully immersed in nature. Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner
Day 7 Nainiahun and Tiwai Island
After breakfast, take a scenic walk to Nainiahun village along trails through brush, rice fields, and cacao and kola nut plantations. Here you will see artisanal diamond extraction and visit Kote Wulehun (the Village of the Great Stone), rich in mystery and traditions. After a local lunch under the palms, walk to the Moa River, where a boat will take you to the enchanting Tiwai Island. Along the way, spot hippos, monkeys, birds, and crocodiles, and admire the sunset colors reflected on the water. In the late afternoon, guided by experts, explore the rainforest to observe chimpanzees and other endangered primates, experiencing the island’s extraordinary biodiversity. Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner
Day 8 Banana Island
Leaving Tiwai Island, continue to the picturesque Banana Island. First, reach Kent Beach, then take a boat across the sparkling waters to this idyllic island. Banana Island retains traces of 19th-century Portuguese infrastructure and a rich cultural heritage linked to the Krio, descendants of freed slaves who settled here.
